Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
