As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
